Speaking at the Grassland UK event this week, he said that low levels of effective fibre in grazed grass combined with potentially variable grazing periods would put cows at risk unless rations are appropriately balanced. He advised supplementing grazing cows with rations low in crude protein, high in starch and digestible fibre, and with an effective live yeast culture to raise rumen pH and stimulate fibre digesting bacteria. “The conditions often experienced by cows at grass in May and June will typically result in a lower rumen pH (often dipping below pH 6), and this will lead to reduced fibre digestion, drops in butterfat and other symptoms commonly associated with SARA during the winter months. “It is not so easy to spot cud balls or other tell-tale signs when cows are at grass, so the problem can go undiagnosed and significant losses can then occur. Apart from the variable nutritional quality of grazed grass, intakes can be disrupted due to changing weather patterns, and even in ideal conditions grazing time in May and June can be as little as 8-9 hours in a 24-hour day according to Hillsborough research. “It is important to take pre-emptive action through supplementary rationing to help cows overcome the potential downsides of grazed grass. It is the cheapest feed available, but in order to make best use of it the cow must have a fully functional rumen. Including the live yeast culture Yea-Sacc1026 as part of the supplementary ration will help to raise the rumen pH and create a better environment for fibre digesting bacteria. Ultimately this will mean more efficient milk production and fewer problems with fertility.” Yea-Sacc1026 is backed by over 25 years of research and is the only live yeast culture to have EU registration for dairy and beef cattle as well as calves. It can be included in compound feed or fed in a straight feed format as Yea-Sacc Farm Pak. - Ends - Picture Caption: Early season grazed grass should be balanced with the right supplementary feeding, including a live yeast culture, if cows are to make best use of this valuable resource, according to Alltech UK.
