Launched at Grassland UK, the SwiftStart system is designed to keep lost forage acres to a minimum whilst at the same time ensuring best practice in the establishment of new herbage leys. “There is little doubt that the best way to establish a new grass or grass/clover ley is through ploughing up the old sward and ideally using a break crop to disrupt the existing weed, pest and disease burdens,” explains Paul Billings. “However, this ‘best practice’ approach has traditionally meant short term reductions in forage dry matter production, which is something many livestock farmers will seek to avoid if possible. “Now, with the availability of a new generation of unique hybrid brassicas we have been able to develop pasture renewal systems for both spring and autumn reseeding that allow the ‘best practice’ approach, but with added forage output as opposed to lost forage acres. “These unique hybrid brassicas are the result of a sophisticated rape / kale crossing programme undertaken by PGG Wrightson Seeds in New Zealand. The first two commercial varieties to come through rigorous agronomic and animal performance trials are Swift and Redstart, which are now fundamental components of the SwiftStart system.” The hybrid brassicas combine the rapid growth characteristics of rape with the winter tolerance of kale, for example, and have been selected for high palatability and nutritional value. Hence, with the correct management, the varieties Swift and Redstart are able to provide a cost effective break crop, producing high yields of high quality forage dry matter at costs of between 3 and 5p per kilogram of dry matter. “Whether for spring or autumn reseeding, the basic premise of the SwiftStart system is to use the old ley for as long as possible into its last productive season before then exploiting the versatility of the hybrid brassica in the most appropriate way to plug what can otherwise be a forage gap. Earlier drilled hybrid brassica crops offer the opportunity for repeat grazing if managed appropriately, whilst those drilled later ahead of a planned spring reseed can be used for over-wintering. “It’s a win:win situation, with additional forage acres and the best possible start for the following ley.” British Seed Houses has published an advisory Farm Bulletin on the SwiftStart system, which can be freely obtained from the company by calling 01522 868714 or via the website HYPERLINK "http://www.britishseedhouses.com" www.britishseedhouses.com. -Ends- Picture caption: Incorporating hybrid brassicas such as Swift into grass reseeding programmes offers a ‘win:win’ of additional forage acres and the best possible start for the new ley, according to British Seed Houses.
