With an outstanding tetraploid perennial ryegrass in AberBite, three Aber High Sugar Grass diploid perennial ryegrasses AberChoice, AberFarell and AberSweet, and two contrasting white clovers in AberAtom and AberSpring, 2009 represents the most successful year yet for the renowned Aberystwyth breeding programmes. AberBite is being heralded as setting a new standard in tetraploid perennial ryegrasses. It has the highest silage yields (112% in year 3 and 105% in year 1) and joint highest grazing yield of any perennial ryegrass (equal with AberChoice HSG at 113%). AberBite also has the best grazing D-value of any late tetraploid variety. In addition to sharing top billing with AberBite for grazing yield, AberChoice HSG is second only to AberAvon on grazing D-value within the late perennial ryegrass list with a score of 7.7. It also has the joint highest silage yield for a late diploid and has the best winter hardiness on the list.   Also new to the growing list of recommended Aber High Sugar Grasses is AberFarell HSG, which boasts the highest conservation cut D-value of all perennial ryegrasses on the list at 8.2 and a grazing yield of 108%. AberSweet HSG has one of the highest water soluble carbohydrate (WSC) contents of the Aber High Sugar Grasses along with a grazing yield of 108% and outstanding ground cover of 7.3. AberAtom is a small-leaf white clover, similar in leaf size to the benchmark variety S184 and offering 10-20% higher yield and with better persistence under lax and hard grazing. Large-leaved AberSpring is comparable in leaf size to the established variety Alice and offers a 10-30% improvement in yield with similar persistence under lax grazing or cutting. Commenting on the IBERS success, Head of Plant Breeding Dr Michael Abberton paid tribute to the grass and clover breeders whose efforts over the last two decades are now coming to full fruition. “Significant changes of emphasis were brought to bear some years ago in anticipation of what would be needed for the livestock industry and the environment in the future,” he explained. “This has included a greater focus on nutritional quality in grasses – but with no compromise on yield and agronomic performance - and greater persistence and reliability in white clover. The results have been increasingly apparent in the Recommended Lists for the last 5-10 years and this year’s unprecedented success is another significant step forward. “I believe the opportunity for livestock farmers in the UK to be sustainable and environmentally sound using forage based systems is now greater than ever, and the grass and clover breeding programmes at IBERS have a major part to play in this.” Of the new IBERS-bred varieties on the list, first seed will be available from British Seed Houses from AberBite and AberChoice from the 2009 harvest, with other varieties available from 2010. However, seed is available now from British Seed Houses for the established varieties that feature strongly in the 2009 Herbage Varieties Guide. - Ends – Picture Caption: The perennial ryegrass AberBite is one of six new herbage varieties to achieve positions on the 2009 NIAB Recommended List for Grass and Clover, launched at Grassland UK.
